Mobile Notary or Remote Online Notarization: Which Option Fits Your Needs?

Not every notarization has to happen the same way. Depending on the document, your circumstances, and the requirements of the organization requesting the notarization, you may have more than one option for completing the process.

Two common choices are mobile notarization and Remote Online Notarization, often called RON.

What Is a Mobile Notary?

A mobile notary travels to an agreed location to complete an in-person notarization. That may be a home, office, hospital, senior living community, business location, or another appropriate setting.

Mobile service can be especially helpful when travel is inconvenient, schedules are tight, or multiple people need to meet in one place.

What Is Remote Online Notarization?

Remote Online Notarization allows an eligible notarization to take place through an approved online platform using live audio-video technology. The signer and notary do not need to be in the same physical location.

The process generally includes identity verification, a live online session, electronic documents, and an electronic notarial certificate.

Which Option Is Better?

There is no single answer that fits every situation. A mobile appointment may be the best choice when original paper documents are involved, when the requesting organization requires an in-person signing, or when the signer prefers face-to-face service.

RON may be especially convenient when travel is difficult, the parties are in different locations, or an eligible document needs to be handled quickly without an in-person meeting.

Document Eligibility Still Matters

Not every document or transaction can necessarily be completed remotely. The organization receiving the document may have its own requirements, and the notarization must comply with applicable law and platform rules.

Before choosing a method, it is wise to confirm that the receiving organization will accept the type of notarization you plan to use.

The Same Professional Standards Apply

Whether an appointment takes place in person or online, the core purpose remains the same: verify identity, complete the proper notarial act, maintain an impartial role, and handle the notarization carefully and professionally.
